Let's go to Qatar!

Should Qatar host the World Cup? On the surface the answer seems like a simple yes but there is much more that should go into consideration when deciding your view point. Yes many have died from building the stadiums and yes the working conditions are horrendous but these problems were there far before it was announced that Qatar would be hosting. Now that the spotlight is on Qatar it has forced Qatar to address these issues. Qatar is now creating laws that force contractors to ensure better working conditions and treatment of the workers. The point being that with the news coverage and outrage of current state of civil rights Qatar has been forced to address these issues. Without these spotlight Qatar would have taken decades to address these issues instead of expediting the process. 1. Such a treatment of fellow human beings poses many ethical issues and civil rights issues. In countries like Qatar it may be acceptable and even legal to have such poor conditions for workers. However, when you are on the world stage as they are with hosting the 2022 world cup, they must do their best in order to please all the different cultures who will be using their facilities. Almost all cultures do not find what they are doing acceptable, and they need to consider different cultural ethics moving forward with construction.

  3. I agree with Adam's comment. Yes this may be the norm for Qatar and similar countries for lack of protection against workers, but since the World Cup is such an international organization with many different countries participating, they should really consider changing this to please all nations. The world cup puts Qatar on a spotlight that not only is good for their country, but allows outsiders a further look into the operations of the nation, and in order to be well regarded, Qatar should make sure they are putting their best nation forward and showing off what makes them a great place.

  4. Hosting a world cup is a very prestigious honor, and clearly Qatar wants this very much. It would create a lot of revenue and publicity for the place and put them in a positive light. However, human rights are key and they must keep this in consideration and treat all of their workers fairly. They don't want a scandal on their hands and for people to think that they should not be hosting the world cup.

  5. There is no reason as to why Qatar should be hosting the World Cup in 2022. Aside from the bizarre temperature situation, how could Qatar win the bid with prominant ethical issues that the whole world can see. There are already more deaths in the construction of this World Cup than all other World Cups combined and we are still six years away from the actual event! With a global spotlight focused on Qatar, the conditions these workers have been working under has been appalling. Globally, it is widely agreed upon that these issues are unacceptable. Although so much bad has already happened, it is never too late to make changes for the better.

  6. As a huge sports fan myself, it has always been a goal of mine to attend all major sporting events. I have to this date been to the World Series, NBA Finals, and Stanley Cup Playoffs, and would absolutely love to attend the World Cup. I think the time and effort that goes in to deciding the host city of the World Cup is very extensive and takes in to account many factors including safety hazards and the environment after the stadiums would be built. Do you think Qatar is a good choice personally Tyler? I personally do and think the Middle East deserves to be a host city at this time in society.

  7. Playing devil's advocate, I think Qatar should 100% host the World Cup. Bringing to light all the illegal, corrupt, and unethical activities in Qatar could create positive reactions for FIFA and Qatar. For example, after numerous people pointing out flaws in their treatment of laborers, Qatar issued new guidelines to contractors in a bid to improve the working conditions of laborers. Clearly there are ethical issues and civil rights issues surrounding the 2022 World Cup, but without the Qatar's nomination, there would have never been any change in the country's civil rights system. Overall, I think the World Cup should stay in Qatar because it is highlighting all the issues in the small country.
